Strength and Power – It’s Not Just for Elite Athletes!

In my line of work, I have the pleasure (and privilege) of coaching clients with a myriad of physical capabilities and a variety of backgrounds.

Whatever their motivation and ambition, all of them have the opportunity to benefit from strength and power training. While they focus on different aspects of physical performance, they are both so important for enhancing general fitness and are essential components of a well-planned and supervised fitness programme. And strength and power training can work for everyone.

What do we mean by “Strength and Power” Coaching

Strength coaching focuses on increasing the maximum force that muscles can generate, while power coaching teaches how to combine strength with explosive and dynamic movements. Both are essential for improving athletic performance and can benefit individuals across various fitness levels.

Clients who embark on a Strength and Power course can expect the outcomes to include enhanced muscle mass, improved bone density and a higher performance at any level of athletic prowess. It even offers some protection from the physical demands of daily life and can reduce the risk of injury. Balance and agility exercises are also incorporated.

So, there is a distinction between Strength and Power, but they are complimentary in their impact on the human frame. Let’s look at the key differences between strength and power training.

Attribute Strength training Power training

Focus Maximum force generation Speed of movement

Goal Increase muscle size & endurance Develop explosive strength

Training style Heavy weights, lower repetitions Moderate weights, higher velocity

Examples Weightlifting, resistance exercises Olympic lifts, plyometrics

And Here’s the Good News!

As my clients will know, I (like any other PT worth their salt) create training plans for each and every one of them according to their needs and desires – and, of course, my assessment of their ability to attain their goals as safely as possible.

Both Strength and Power training have always played roles in my sessions but I am currently undertaking a further coaching qualification to enable me to offer a more focused training solution to those of my clientele who feel they need more attention to the strength and power aspects of their fitness.

I am looking forward to launching my first “Strength and Power” focused programme soon. For those who want to perfect their lifts, or get into Strength training for the first time, or improve their power-generation in their sport of choice.
